Washing Questions

What does no-rinse mean, exactly?

It means exactly that – you just Soak your stuff and go. You don’t have to rinse your clothes out – really. Because Soak is a low-suds liquid, the dirt and detergent come out in the water, and whatever is left in the item evaporates. When you squeeze out the water, all that’s left behind is a hint of fragrance that dissipates over time. You can certainly rinse if you want, but rinsing won’t affect how Soak cleans. It will just remove the fragrance. Because no-rinse requires less agitation, it’s easier on fabrics. Plus, the process uses less water, which is good for the planet.

Is hand washing hard?

No. It’s actually remarkably easy – all it takes is a quick Soak. In fact, we have a bunch of customers who have stopped taking their stuff to the dry cleaner and are Soaking it instead – because it’s easier, healthier, cheaper and smells way better. Be sure to check the fabric content and care instructions before soaking any garments labelled “dry clean only.”  Still not sure? Check out our Soak School post When to Dry Clean.

How do I test for colour fastness?

Rub a bit of Soak on an inconspicuous part of the garment and rinse after two minutes. If there’s no bleeding, you’re good to go.

Can I use Soak in the machine?

Yes. Soak is ideal for either hand or machine washing, and can also be used in High Efficiency (HE) machines. Use the delicate cycle and measure Soak based on your machine’s instructions. Feel free to either use or skip the rinse cycle, depending on what you are washing.

I forgot about my item and left it in Soak overnight. Is it okay?

Absolutely. There’s nothing in Soak that will harm your clothes. Fifteen minutes is all you really need, though – leaving things in longer won’t make them any cleaner.

Can I use Soak with silks?

Soak should be safe to use on most silks, as it is pH neutral. We always recommend testing in a small inconspicuous area first to ensure the color won’t run, as colors in silk can bleed. For more info, check out our Soak School post on Silk.

About Soak

What is Soak?

Soak is modern care for the laundry you love. It is a pure, gentle and deliciously scented way to wash the delicate items you care about most. Soak laundry soap is designed with fabric-friendly ingredients that revitalize fibers so they look great and last longer.

What are the fragrances like?

All of our fragrances are really light and clean. The fragrance doesn’t affect to efficacy; it just makes for a more enjoyable washing experience. Many customers purchase more than one fragrance to use depending on their mood. For more information on our fragrances, visit Soak School.

Are the fragrances strong?

None of our scents will leave a strong or heavy fragrance lingering in your garments. They’re formulated to leave just a hint of freshness on the item after it has been washed. When customers were asked to compare Soak to other fine fabric detergents, they found the scent more delicate, fresher and milder than the current market leaders. For more information on fragrances, watch Soak Fragrances on YouTube.

I’m sensitive to fragrance - Do you have one that’s unscented?

Scentless is “for your sensitive side” and contains zero fragrance. Other than that, it’s exactly the same as our scented Soaks – a mild, plant-based formula that’s gentle on the laundry you love most.

Are your fragrances made from essential oils?

We use synthetic fragrances in our products and they are hypoallergenic.

What’s in a Soak bottle?

Developed to be as easy on the environment as it is on your clothes, Soak is sulphate-free, made with renewable ingredients, and doesn’t have glycols, EO, PO, SLS, SLES, DEA or MEA. Just mild, biodegradable, plant derived ingredients that are a great way to show your laundry (and the planet) some love. Our bottles are made with 100% post-consumer resin. We use a recyclable label substrate and water-based, environmentally safe inks. The ingredients are listed on every bottle. Our base formulation is the same, with Scentless having no parfum.

Is Soak organic?

No. However, it is environmentally-friendly, biodegradable and the bottles are recyclable and printed with water-based inks. Organic and all-natural products tend to need to be refrigerated and have short shelf lives; Soak is a stable product that will not fog or separate over time.

Is Soak tested on animals? Do Soak products contain animal products?

Soak products and ingredients do not contain any animal products or by-products. They are also not tested on animals, nor do our suppliers use animal testing.

Where is Soak made?

Soak laundry soap, Flatter ironing spray and Handmaid hand cream are formulated and responsibly manufactured in Ontario, Canada. We’re an all-Canadian brand and proud of it!

We also have a range of secondary products that support our philosophy of helping our customers care for the washables they cherish the most. These products are manufactured in different locations around the world.  Our basins are made in Spain and our Soak Eco Wash Bags are produced in China. And from time to time we work with designers, makers and small businesses to bring you limited edition bundles and products.

Why is my older bottle of Soak dark?

We recommend that Soak is used within 3 years after opening. Over time, the fragrance may lessen, and the product may darken. This is simply due to UV exposure, but neither will change the efficacy of the product.

Can soak help protect my wool against moths?

No laundry wash will keep moths away from your knits (not Soak, and not our competitors). However, because moths are attracted to the oils from your skin that are trapped in the fibers, your best bet is to wash things regularly and store them clean, especially before you put them away for the season. We don’t recommend using moth balls. Not only do they smell awful, they contain harsh, toxic chemicals that aren’t good for anyone. For more seasonal storage tips, visit Soak School.
